For the first time in North America, Al-Awda Folkloric Band from Palestine 48 is on tour here in New Jersey! We invite the Palestinian community and all friends, allies, and supporters to this evening of cultural celebration and cultural resistance.

New Jersey Solidarity - Activists for the Liberation of Palestine invites you to an evening of music and singing performed by Al-Awda, a folkloric musical group from Palestine. It is one of the rare times in recent years that a group of Palestinian musicians from 1948 Palestine and the Golan Heights will be presenting a show of rich traditional Palestinian music. The group will be in New Jersey as part of a North American tour with stops in Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, New Jersey, New York and DC. The event in New Jersey aims to raise funds to build a Palestine community and cultural center!

The Al-Awda group is part of the Zaitoun Association, which was formed in Palestine by artists and musicians from the Galilee in 2000. The Zaitoun Association's goal is to preserve Palestinian culture and work on deepening ties between Palestinians and their culture. The name "Zaitoun" in Arabic means olives. It was chosen to demonstrate Palestinians strong attachment to their land, particularly to the olive tree with all the symbolism of resistance, history and culture it carries.

Through their music, Al-Awda aims to express the feeling of Palestinian suffering and resistance through music written in complex Arabic notes.

The group specializes in singing and playing traditional cultural songs, in addition to modern music. Al-Awda's music is also viewed as a cultural representation of the central issue to the ongoing Palestinian liberation struggle, and the right of return for refugees to 1948 Palestine.
