U.S. Political Imprisonment Protested

On Friday, May 13, Al-Awda New York and members of the Yemeni and Arab community picketed outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York, highlighting the case of Sheikh Mohammed al-Moayad and Mohammed Zayad, two Yemeni nationals imprisoned in the United States and recently convicted on charges of providing "material support" to Palestinian resistance organizations. al-Moayad and Zayad, kidnapped by the United States government from Germany, were trumpeted at the time of their arrest as major "al-Qaeda" supporters, a charge of which they were acquitted in court.

During the trial of these men, the government attempted to block the entry of a Palestinian-born defense attorney into the case, alleging that her "foreign-born" status posed an "increased risk." The prejudice and racism of the prosecution was revealed on numerous occasions, including one prosecutor's reference to a Qu'ranic verse as the "terrorist verse."

The case was the subject of discussion and strategizing at the recent Al-Awda international convention in Los Angeles, and Al-Awda New York has pledged to continue to support al-Moayad and Zayad and draw attention to their case. For more information, please see http://www.al-awdany.org.
